Making history at Bardeen Quad

August 25th 2007 - The second official gathering of the Malaysian students of UIUC for the 07/08 school year, at the Engineering Quad, was a momentous one. The Raya photoshoot is an annual event; nevertheless a merry and anticipated one every year. The product of the photoshoot is to be published in the Utusan Malaysia paper as a Hari Raya greeting from the Malaysians at UIUC.

In addition to this year's photoshoot, we were gathered to honor the 50th anniversary of our beloved Malaysia's 50th year of independence. Following the photoshoot, all Malaysians present congregated on the south side of the quad and, for the first time in the university's history, echoed the 'Merdeka!' declaration three times, led by Rapik, our PhD student in the Civil Engineering Department. It was our humble yet sincere part in the celebration of Malaysia's 50th year of independence, from a far away place from home.

President of the Malaysian Students' Association, UIUC, Atikah, and Vice President, Alan, unveiled the official logo of the association in the midst of the event. It is the first time we are bestowed with a logo of our own to represent ourselves in the international community of the university.

Amidst our daily pursuits in a foreign land, we occasionally take time out to remember and honor our Malaysian roots. There is definitely more to look forward to as we are only barely stepping into the new school year. Have a good year, everyone...

i take great pride and joy in celebrating our nation's independence day. 50 years down the line, let us always remember the names of those who had fought hard for our country's independence.
