Malaysian Cultural Exhibition 2011 and Southeast Asian Week

The union was rocked by the Malaysian Cultural Exhibition on the 28th March 2011. This event was organized by the Malaysian Students Association of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in conjunction with the Southeast Asian Week 2011 which is the first of its kind. The South East Asian Week 2011 was jointly organized by 8 Southeast Asian/Asian-American groups including Student Associations from Thailand, Indonesia, Phillippines, Vietnam and Singapore.

Traditional performances such as Dikir Barat, Tarian Sarawak , Silat and Fashion show attracted quite a number of people. The crowds enjoyed the taste of Malaysian kuihs - Kuih Rose, Seri Muka and Kek Batik - which were served for free at the exhibiition.

The purpose of the exhibition is not only to promote the Malaysian culture to everyone on campus but also to make us realize of the uniqueness of our own culture. All enthusiastic Masa members had been really helpful in promoting Malaysia to people on the U of I campus. All in all, the exhibition has triggered the curiosity of the people around us about Malaysia.

The week ended with the event called the Southeast Asian Cultural Showcase on Saturday, April 2nd. The showcase started with a keynote Speech by the ASEAN Secretary General, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan and was followed by performances by the Malaysian Students Association (we presented our Tarian Sarawak) and performances by other student associations. We served our famous Malaysian delicacy - the legendary Nasi Lemak with Rendang Ayam - for the crowd. We also promoted Malaysia with the set-up of our booth and the presence of Malaysian officials from Chicago.
