MaSA "Ais Kacang" Fundraiser '14

Our first fundraising for the 14-15 academic year is, none other than the famous Ais Kacang dessert! We had a fundraising booth on the Quad near the south entrance of the Illini Union from Tuesday September 23rd to Wednesday September 24th. We had volunteers sign up with us to help prepare and man the booth and even shout out “Malaysian Shaved Ice for a dollar!” as people pass by.

Malaysian Student Association proudly began their first fundraising event in the month of September 2013 in spirit of promoting Malaysian culture to the U of I campus. Last year we managed to have three successful fundraising events and now that we are in the new academic year, we are stoked to bring more!

Ais Kacang is a famous dessert sold in Malaysia, mostly at stalls and in restaurants. It is basically shaved ice topped with a great variety of ingredients! For our very own ais kacang, we made do with whatever ingredients we have available to us within the Champaign Urbana county. Our ais kacang had sweet corn, grass jelly and red beans condiments and topped with homemade sirap, caramel brown sugar and evaporated milk!

The weather on the two sale days was remarkably sunny and perfect for a cup of cold shaved ice! With a dollar in one’s pocket, they could get a chance to experience this surprise in a cup as they soak in the sun. Many of our members came to support us, even hung out behind the booth on the green grass.

But the best part is having the non-Malaysians approach our booth, some due to familiarity from having been to Malaysia before and some who are just simply curious and have their interest tickled! Many who were skeptical of the taste were surprised by the sweetness and deliciousness of the Ais Kacang. Some even came back for more! What a great range of customers we had that day and were happy to serve.
